This island of Greece was once under many different rulings, from Romans, to Norman and even to English ownership. It was only in 1864 that the island united with Greece and together with the Ionian islands.

 

Truly Kefalonia Greece is a great tourist destination, especially if you want to see great scenery of landscapes, visit nearby islands and experience a slice from the past in getting up close to the ruins.

 

The island is made up of villages with colorful houses, so if you want to take a break from exploring the caves, rocky mountains or bathing at the beach, you can always walk, bike or rent a car and tour the wonderful island. One remarkable place that you should visit when you come to Kefalonia Greece is the St. Gerasimos Monastery. This is an old monastery built from the caves where you have to go down and see where St. Gerasimos once lived as a hermit. The body of the saint is also mummified and placed in that cave, making this place more interesting.

 

If you want more about history, you can visit the Mycenaean Tombs, located below St. George’s castle. There are still many ruins and old monasteries in this island for history enthusiasts.

 

Another place that you should never miss visiting in this place is the Potamaki beach, the place of protected Loggerhead turtles. They say the best time to visit this place is at night, where you may see female turtles come ashore and lay their eggs.

 

 

Like most islands in Greece, Kefalonia is known for its beaches. Skala beach is said to be the island’s best beach. This white sand beach with clear waters stretch over a mile long, not to mention it is background with rocky mountains and pine trees. Beaches are a very popular common tourist destination for the families, and there are so many to choose from your sure to find your own space. There are also many sun lounges for sun lovers to have, but be sure to use good sun block and have an umbrella during summer, as heat can get really high. Also, water sports equipments and extreme water rides are just around the corner to hire.
